Default Transmission Help Needed

First off, hi I'm another new guy on here. Got the bike on the road last year and is my first bike.

The bike is a 97 cbr 900rr. Has 32k and two up on back sprockets recently.

The issue is my transmission is skipping out of second and sometimes third under hard acceleration. I was looking at parts to replace new and didn't like the price. Not looking to put that much more money into a 97. Wondering if I could take a full transmission out of a different year 900rr. Called Honda House and they said not to waste my money or time for a 95 transmission due to the fact that there are direct part numbers. Also said that it wouldn't cross reference to anything else.

Guessing that part numbers change yearly but would I be able to put something else in there? I found the whole setup on eBay for $75 out of a 95 and got me thinking... Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd just keep my eyes open for the right year tranny- I bought all new factory parts for mine years ago, and I'm still not walking right!
Also, if you're mechanically inclined, (sounds like you are) its a pretty easy job with not fine tuning or shimming- just a part stacked on another part, with a snap ring here and there... Piece of cake!

True. I can still ride it until I do find one. Just not as fun. Thinking about selling it the way it is. I'm ready for an upgrade anyways... Think I should replace all six gears or just the ones giving me problems? Would be willing to buy brand new for the parts that it actually needs.

Why fix what's not broken?
Do it since your in there.
New or used?

Totally up in the air on this one!

I just bought a 98 tranny for my 93 CBR900RR. The tranny's are NOT the same. In 97-98 they have a different rotation on the shift drum and the tooth count on the trannys are not the same.

Now I'm wondering if I should use it or buy all the new parts I need for my 93 as I can not find what I need used.

i think if you would swap a 96,97 or 98 you might be safe. iknow the gear ratios have changed in 98 but i think the 96- 97 are the same. spend some time on a honda parts site looking at the different years. I know 96 97 clutches are the same but change in 98. same with the speed sensor on 96 97 they are the same but 98 changes. If it were me i would look on line and get the gears& dogs off the internet and do it right Taking it apart is not the hardest thing but it is pretty intense i just did a cana of tuna and wont do another one. the gears are cheap if you only have to do it once buying used you dont know what you are getting. If this is not for you you could always sell it on Ebay for parts and get another.
