i have a clunking in front end-when front brake applied and bars pushedsteering head bearings?

They have floating calipers too. But yeah check your steering stem. Take the top triple off,you can't just tighten the top nut.

can you tighten the steering head without re-packing and disasembling the whole stem?

Thanks grinder.I have a 97 like the one you are parting out.Its pretty mint,8000 miles.I did some wheelies on it and now notice a good clunk in the front.Hope i can just tighten up the adjuster nut.

Tighten it all. Every nut and bolt on your frontend.

personally I would grease the bearings/races real well too. Then snug it up. If you've never done this before, don't over-tighten the lower stem nut. It doesn't take much, like 7 foot lbs. It's easier to do if you remove your front wheel and maybe your forks too, so you can feel the upper clamp movement. hope this helps. jd
