two connections in the plug on the harness probably touched causing a short which led to your meltdown. i don't know why this happens, but it's pretty common with the older 900's. get a new rectifierthen cut the plug for the rectifier off the wiring harness(make sure you mark where each wire goes for reassembly), making sure not to cut the wires too short, leave as much length on them as possible, also some of the wires will have to be lengthened(use the same gauge wire as the wire you are lengthening).make sure you get single (male) end connectors with clear insulationcovers, without them the connectors will arc causing another meltdown.plug each connector, one at a time into the rectifier.

If the rectifier goes bad can allow up to and more than 3 times the juice runing through yer wires to yer battery. I learned that one the hard way [:'(]. But it didnt just melt my wires it cooked 2 batteries aswell
