Default Rebuilding a cbr 900 rr

Hello all.

So I'm starting this post to keep it for myself. Going to probably ask a few times for help with this since I haven't touched a cbr in years. Had a Chinese bike for 4 years but bought a bike in my budget and now just have to build it up.

So to start off, this was a bike someone converted into a stunt bike and then back to a road bike. So it's no where near original. I don't want to make it original. I just want to build it up nicely for myself to enjoy.

So got new brakes in, new spark plugs, cleaned out old brake fluid from lines and of course, messed with the headlights. Added two new driving lights.

I'm going to test cold start when I get home. Put new plugs in so have to see if that changed. Otherwise bike struggled to start on cold start. I checked the petcock, it doesn't leak fuel when it's disconnected. Haven't done the proper test but I assume that means the diaphragm is working since it needs suction.

Which brings me to the other point. Starvation at higher rpm. The gear it happens in changes. Sometimes first, sometimes only third. I have ordered a carb rebuilt kit. So gonna give that a go but it's from China. So almost a three month wait for it.

But once warm, it idles roughly, sometimes 3k rom and then drops slowly to 1k rpm. Other times it struggles with pulling away. You really gotta give it a little to get away properly.

I think I need to do the timing chain tensioner. I have a tapping noise, especially audible once the bike has heated up. I'll check if they installed after market or if it's still stock.

Other than that, when I get to the rest needing help, I'll post something here.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with the rebuild. I would also remove the petcock to check the filter and make sure there isn't any crud in the bottom of the tank.
There are a number of posts on here on carb cleaning which will be invaluable when you get to it.

I saw a few of them but I'll look over them a little closer when I have the set to make sure I follow the right steps. But otherwise, I think this build will be fun. Will take a year or two but I've got nothing but time.

Take loads of pictures when doing the carbs, and yes time and being methodical is the approach that is needed. Fingers crossed all goes well.
Plenty of people on here that are around to help as and when you need it... or even just some moral support when the undoubted fubar happens ( we have all been there and done that!)

Well I've got fingers crossed for an eventual good outcome. And I'll definitely ask around and see who can give me advice as I carry on.
