Update: Went looking for a used Yamaha rectifier, they didn't have any at my local junkyard. Got an upgraded Honda one (off a newer model, much larger, has cooling fins/heatsink).

Hard wired/soldered the bad boy back on my bike and fired right up (with a new battery). Charging at 14.2 on idle, little bit higher on higher revs.

Very chuffed.

Newbie to this site (but Blade owner since 1993 - a 1992 model surprisingly ... ) abd thought I'd chip in here. When my R/R decided to expire (just recently as it happens) I read about and found that R/Rs from later model bikes are a much better bet than the rubbish fitted as stock. I actually fitted one from a CBR1000 Blade (2008 model from memory) though the |Yamaha ones are a better bet - you can get the connectors for them! Mine is attached with spade connectors.

Thread here ... 04-06 R1 Rr Installation How To - Modifications - VFR Discussion ... and more like them if you search - and connectors here ... R/R Connectors ....

I also took the opportunity to beef-up the earthing on my bike. I used a hole in the opposite frame gusset that holds the R/R as an earthing point, rather than the negative terminal of the battery. That way all earths go back to that bolt and there is a single cable to the battery -ve - neeater that way. I added an engine earth and a frame earth. There's a good place to put a frame earth just under the tab that holds the spout for the coolant.

HTH

Generally yes, because the stator is causing the reg/rec to fluctuate too much and they can burn out. I had it happen on my 1000F - one of the coils in my stator had burned, you couldn't see it but it showed up on the test using a megger tester. Replaced the stator cover and winding and Reg/rec- the stator cover and windings on the 1000F are one unit - and all was well.

I recently did the r/r and the stator on my 954, after the r/r died the stator got fried. I got the r/r for $130au and the stator for $180au from regulatorrectifiers in the USA. I had it in Australia in 10 days, bloody good product in bloody good time

finally got around to doing this. thanks again Doug_ for the tip.
