Motor Knock
Hey does anyone know if this is normal on a 93 900.. When I start up the bike for the first time after sitting for about 8 hours it sounds like a rod knock for about 5-10 seconds then goes away and you dont hear it again??? Is there something wrong with my carb jets ....choke issue???? Thanks
I've read that this noise can be attributed to piston slap during cold startups and that its quite normal. when i got my new motor after throwing rods 2 and 3 through the block belive me every little noise I hear coming from the motor gets me concerned...haha...but maybe check the oil levels and see if there might be any shavings just for good measure...my friend had a 93 that he put 65,000 miles on and didn't have any trouble with it ever and he rides hard. he just kept up on maintenance. he sold it a year ago and I still see it around and it still sounds healthy as ever
Thanks for the quit replies guys. I work on cars for a living but this is my first bike and I figured I would ask people that have had them longer then me. I just changed the oil on the bike and I got Spectro Golden 4 from the dealer...It;s synthetic.. I was thinking about using ams oil.. What do you guys think???
Hey you are the one suppose to share your technical knowledge with most of us here then....
What I've heard that synthetic will not be so suitable; no idea why. I'm using castrol semi synth and so far no problem.

Hey mofun08
Yeah, I use Castrol semi synth on my 1993 900RR as well and no problems whatsoever. At what revs do you hear that? If my revs are at 1K while cold then I hear some tapping as well. On cold starts I always use my choke and hold her at 1.5K or 2K rpm until she is warm, then I adjust my idle screw to 1.5K until she is warmed up. In that procedure I hear no knock whatsoever.

Well as of right now my choke cable is frozen so I kinda get it started and hold the throttle at about 1500 rpm until I can let off and it idles fine. I was thinking of using amsoil or repsol oil? What do you guys think? Thanks...and I wont be using Full Synthetic ever again. I will be using semi or regular based moto oil. ......
Im not too sure about those makes cuz we dont get them regularly here in South Africa, but a semi synth oil is much better for an engine than a mineral oil. Mineral oils degrade faster and dont offer as great heat/friction protection in high revving engines such as motorcycle engines. According to their website, Amsoil has a great 10W-30 oil that is wet clutch compatible as well. Some people who have used other crappy motor oils in their bikes complain about their clutches as it doesnt work to great with the wet clutch. I use Castrol semi-synth 10W-40 in my baby and I have no probs whatsoever. If we had Amsoil here I would definitely use it, cuz you cannot skimp on the protection of your engine.
