Default How to get the best deal?

I have a '96 900RR and unless something comes up, I'm going to get either brand new gixr or a new 1000RR from a dealer sometime in early summer. Since I've never bought a new bike before, I'm very curious as to how to get the best deal possible. It would seem the prices have gone up for '07 and while I'm sure this is pissing everyone off that's planning on a new purchase, I need to know EXACTLY how to approach this. Is is like a car? Do I pit the dealers against each other or does any of this really matter (please don't tell me that this is true).

Before someone askes, the '96 will not be a trade in and is not for sale. It will be my practice wheelie bike

Thanks!
-Ken

This is my current bike. . .not as pretty as the photo since I've gone down on it three times since I've owned it:

Cash talks man. Take cash if at all possible. Also, look at hold over 06 models. They are going CHEAP to get them out of inventory. I just saw an 06 ZX-10R roll out the dealership this weekend for $8400 brand spankin. I know you arent looking for a Cow, but still, 06 hold overs are the way to go. You'll get them cheaper and the R1 is really the only one that had much work done to it anyway, or the Gixxer, but still, both were minimal upgrades to engine's. The R1 being the most significant, fly by wire, 16 valves again etc. So unless you need the latest greatest (it appears you dont with a 96 CBR RR) get an 06 with cash and bargin away.
Good luck man.

Thanks Gixx. . .have been thinking about it and you are probably right. I won't miss the newer featers and could probalby get one from last year or the year before from some dealer out there. Question is, where? I would imagine that there could quite possible be a database I could search for new bikes that have been sitting on showroom floors, but don't know where to start. I probably don't want anything older than 2005, though.

Thanks,
Ken

www.cycletraderonline.com

There are a few dealers on there. Look for your state and see what they have.

www.motorcyclejunk.com

That is where the guy found my 900RR. There may be a few on there. Look on
www.motorcyclistonline.com

They usually have some web area that lists a bunch of information regarding dealers, track days, etc.

Actually, I'm tired of fixing someone else's problems which is why I want one that's never been owned. Yes, I could get lucky but I honestly don't know enough about what to look for to be careful so I've decided to buy one that comes with a warranty and has NEVER been owned by anyone. I know it will costs me, but after spending $4200 (I just didn't' know any better) for the 900 in the picture about and another $1000+ on replacement parts, I've had enough. Sorry, but it's new or I drive the 900 until it blows up. I'm reading the latest cycleworld article on the new CBR600 and I'm considering it.

Thanks for the site info though. . I will most certainly take a look.

Let me tell you my exp. I went to a pretty well know dealer in the North Seattle, WA area for my honda.
It was a well known dealer: www.cyclebarn.com lynnwood branch.
I got my bike an used 2005 CBR1000RR, Repsol ed ALL STOCK.last summer. I wasnt planning on buying a bike just got a 99 CBR900RR at teh acction a month ago. Ya my first bike just a few months prior to buying a 1000. CRAZY i agree.
Well i went to the dealer and saw a beautiful sight. My buddy and i were just going to screw around and for kickes lets see "how low we can he go".
I offered i think like 8000 plus i knew i needed gear (helment, jacket, gloves).
Well my list goes
total paid $12,000
ICON leather jacket: $520
Aftermarket warrenty for 2 years $1000, price was 1200
ICONgolves: $90
two brother carbonexhaust system. partial not full : i think it was like $560incl install
fender eliminator:180
LED turn sig:95
SHOEI helment:$550 retail and the dealer was not cheap. I oculd have goeent all of it online cheaper.
total:
Note i went in thinking I wasnot going above $8500 for the bik TOPS.
So anything they say about payment or what ever i didnt care about. Alll i knew was 8500 max on the bike.
I did the math in my head on IF i did payment what i wanted to pay and for how long.
KNOW THE MATH
Me i factored $8500 cash
option 1 $8500/60 =$141.66/mo option 2 8500/48= 178.08/mo
Add tax because they may or not. Make a rough estimate
Do this so it they start to throw numbers at you And you ll know what the monthly payments should be.
I paid CASH. so i didnt have to factor interest because i didnt finace it there for not interest was added.
I was so low or should we say they wanted more profit then i was going to allow. They brought the sales manager down to talk to me.
I knew they would . They always bring the sales manager down. Unless your dumb enough to pay there asking price. Please say your no tgoing to remotly do that.
At first i know what i wanted to pay for thte bike. But i havent gone to look at the bike toys yet.
Rememebr they make moneyon everything.
I went tothe apparel counter and look for thecoolest stuff.$$$$$ pricedstuff they had. the helmet i wanted had tobo ordered. it was the 2006 Shoei helemnt withe the jocker on it (really cool+ matched the repsol orange)
When i returned to the salesman. told him what i wanted and showed him the print out the parts/apparel sales guy gave me. That sheet shows the retail price. Retails like the manufactures price. That price is made up from the manufacturer and its always high. Good write off if theres any losses ( I took accounting classes so i know how it all works. Mostly anyways)
Remeber you can pay a reasonable price. Dont pay $600 for a jacket whick i found out i could have gotten for $400 onlineI had assumed i could get it cheaper at arpound $400. trust your self and your instints. Youve been around for awhile and you know what things cost new/ used/ last years models. TRUST YOUR SELF.
Well he told me some price in the 13000 realm. ble ble bla is all i heard. I told him "bottom line i will pay 10000 for the bike and all the gear. I went up becuase i know i asked for a lot of high priced gear. Plus i dint expect to get a 2 year warrenty.
I flexible and kept my cool. Dont let your self go in all alone you need to have a cheap *** guy friend/girlfriend with you.One that will say that price is still still still to high. This technique does not allow the salemen to get you excited and buy on impulse.
DONT Buy on impulse.
My friend a cheap *** but so am i.
I love my bike ut dont like to ride. Sorry to say that. its my toy only.

Well they would not move on ther eprice so i said i had to go. They chased me out of the place. I knew they would run after me. and if they didnt i knew my price was low. But not to low for th

Ok, I found an '06 CBR1000 for a bit less than $10K. . .deal or no deal?

(brand new, never been ridden)

PS - Deek . .thanks for taking the time to post the very informative response, but it sounds like you got caught up in the moment. I go in wanting one thing. . the bike, car, whatever. . .NOTHING else. If I find I do need something, I'll get it later. Saves on "buyer's remorse" and yes, I have been there when I was younger. Hopefully, other members will heed your advice.
