getting a 900rr started for the first time
Hey everybody. I am new to the forum and am hoping for some advice to get me going in the right direction.
I have wanted a 900RR since the late 90's and just haven;t done it until now. I purchased a 97 900RR that has been sitting for about 4 years. It has 12k original miles on it and doesn't appear to have been abused.
New battery installed and while trying to start, get a pop out of the exhaust and sometimes a blue flame.
I just got it home tonight and haven't done anything, yet. But that is what I have to work with.
I will start by draining the fuel, cleaning the tank and adding new fuel. Replacing the plugs, air filter and changing the oil and filter.
My concern is that this sounds like an ignition or valve issue. Even though I can't say the rotten fuel wouldn't do that, too.
Any suggestions before I get started on this project?
Thanks everybody and I hope to be talking to some of you. I am excited about getting a 900RR finally....

Replace all liquids....coolant, oil, brake fluid...but your main concern will be the carb...get it clean & adjust the jets if needed...there are many thread here regarding carb cleaning & re-jetting...
Hope you get your RR back up and running soon!!!

Give it the starting fluid/ether treatment. That will allow any clogged orifices to open up. If it continues to run, mission accomplished. But if the motor keeps stalling after that, go the carb cleaning route.
Do a compression test while changing the plugs. If you have a valve issue, it will show up in your readings.
As well as fluids, make sure to check the fork oil/seals and the tires. One you get it running right, i strongly suggest replacing the tires before riding on them. The tread may be good, but the rubber will harden and rot from age.

I am not that familiar with forums. How do I find the link to the carb rebuilds/cleaning on the 900RR?
Thanks
one thing- CLEAN the carbs, don't just dive in a mess with the jets- My money says it probably ran just fine the way it is- i GUARANTEE if it's the carbs, they're full of varnish and crud. *** note *** It took me three times cleaning and filling with fuel to fix my issues. and that's all that was needed. there are so many tiny holes and crevices in there to collect junk it's not even funny! Good luck!
exciter900rr is right...focus on cleaning the carb...don't mess with the jet....clean carb and see how it run....bike may just have been sitting...does not mean carb need to be rebuild or adjusting to sync....clean it and it may just run find...good luck and keep us posted
Here's a link to sync carb if in need...
