Default Fuel Leak

Tried to ride the bike for the 1st time tonight and had a big time fuel leak from the carbs. Looks like they are leaking at the o-rings between the carbs for the fuel inlet feeds. Didn't have any issue last year.

I ended moving the lines up and down and it seemed to seal better but still had a very small leak. I really don't want to bust the carbs apart to replace all the o rings. Do you think just rechecking torque on the rod bolts holding the carbs together would help or do you think is should just bite the bullet and break the carbs apart and put all new o rings?

Looking for opinions or if someone had this happen to you after sitting all winter.

Thanks...

Nick

Pain eh !!...I know how you feel...you park up a perfectly good bike and just when you want to ride this appears. The torque settings wont have altered and I think you`ve answered the question yourself, even if theres a hint of a fuel leak you just know you wont be happy till its sorted. Now where`s that bullet....time for new seals I think !

I just went through this two weeks ago. I started mine up after it ran out of fuel sitting in the garage (I was letting it idle). I filled mine with 110 octane, started it, rode it and put it away. 3 days later I got on it to ride and I smelled gas. I looked and it was leaking in the same place yours is. I pulled the carbs, replaced the o-rings for the fuel inlet and put it back together. Then started it, rode it and put it away. Next time I started it was leaking again, this time it was the bowl o-rings. So the carbs had to come off again. I replaced the bowl gaskets, Fuel inlet needles, o-rings on the air mixture screws, bowl drain o-rings and I replaced the inlet o-rings again just to make sure, that was 2 weeks ago and so far so good.

I noticed that all the o-rings for the fuel inlet were cracked and the bowl o-ring gaskets were also cracked.

I would pull the carbs and replace everything I did.

To answer your question on rechecking the torque on the thru bolts. That won't fix it. The carbs butt up tight to one another so retorquing them will not tighten the connection of the o-rings and fuel inlet tees.

Appreciate all the input. Kind of what I figured.... I don't have time right now to do this myself.... got an appt. set up at my buddies shop to replace the fuel linlet o-rings. Hopefully the rest are Ok since I replaced all the other gaskets and o-rings last year (basically everything i could without breaking the carbs apart).

Went out in the garage today and played around with the CBR... Eureka... not leaking anymore. I think I'm going to keep an eye on it and ride it this summer and then take it into my buddy and have him redo the fuel inlet o-rings over the winter....

Doug,

Did you replace everything above with OEM or aftermarket parts. If aftermarket, would you mind telling me where you purchased them? I've priced out OEM gaskets and o-rings and found they're very expensive (like everything else). Let me know when you get a minute.

Thanks,

John

Hey, John,
I wanted to get the job done fast and when I go to the dealer everything needs to be ordered. I just went to NAPA and matched up the o-rings for the fuel inlet tee's. That was the first go round. The second time I pulled the carbs, I bought kits off of eBay, they were out of Canada. The kits came with everything except the fuel inlet Tee o-rings. I used the NAPA o-rings again.

I think I got $4.00 in the NAPA o-rings and $52.49 + $13.75sh in the kits. which they have gone up since I bought them. Click Here

Hope this helps and nice bike.
