Default Front Sproket

Ok, since riding season is officially over for me, I'm finally getting around to changing my chain and sprockets. The problem I have is that the front sprocket is held in position by a single bolt and I can't figure out how to get it off. Does it have standard threads (i.e., right to tight, left to loose?) or is it a reversed threaded bolt? Secondly, I can't seem to find a way to hold the old sprocket in position. . .is there a secret to this part?

i have a 93 motor and it should be the same.. it is lefty loosey and i took and pryed a big scredriver in the sprocket and put a 3 foot long pipe on the breaker bar for leverage.. and i put it in gear too..hope this helps...or try a air ratchet too.

EDIT: responded too slow!
Good advice above. An imact tool is a much better option to torque it off fast, rather than pry bars.

i tried it just in gear and with a torque wrench and it turns the motor over without somehow locking the sprocket , but another thing i thought of would be that you could use the back brake.........

oh yeah i was doing it on a rear stand too so i should have mentioned that... should be easier with the rear tire on the ground..[:@]

don't have an impact gun and since the chain is not on, the back brake won't do much. . .and yup, putting it in any gear doesn't do much to help. Isn't there someplace I can attach a wrench to the crank shaft to hold the motor in position? Mabye turning it into a two person job? I thought of putting a large screwdriver or pry bar to block it somehow, but I'm afraid of possible damage and my bike has already suffered enough under my rule.

Since your replacing the sprocket can you clamp it with some kind of pliers/vice grips/etc?

Just go to a local tool rental store or to Sears and buy/rent an electrical impact drill. It's a good inventment on the long run. You can use it on your car lugs, Rebuilding your forks, etc. Beats breaking a bolt and paying extra to have the broken bolt extracted. Ebay has them from 30-80 for the corded ones with shipping added. Great investment! It will cost you more to repair if you bend or break something. [:@]
