Engine missing and running rough
Just got my bike out of storage and it ran fine before putting it in storage. I always add stabil, turn the fuel off and run all the fuel out of the carbs. I started it upand it runs rough and has a miss from the sound of the exhaust. I thought it might need to be ridden to clear it out but it has not helped. It chugs and chokes when starting from a stop but it does have plenty of power and the miss seems to disappear when I open up the throttle and get the rpms up. I checked the plugs and they're ok. Checked the carbs (as much as I could without pulling them off or apart) and didn't see any sludge or gum. Any ideas? Thanks guys!

I'm not going to open a can of worms if I pull the carbs off, am I? I am mechanically inclinded but I've always been afraid of carbs....like I'll lose a part or knock something out of adjustment. Is there a lot to taking them off?
Ok, I took the carbs off but I didn't separate them but I did take off all the covers like the float covers and the ones with the black diaphram looking thing. Everything is really clean. I couldn't find one speck of sludge or gum. I blew air thru everything with a little carb cleaner. All fuel tubes and filter are clear so I guess I'll put them back on and hope for the best. I know I said the plugs looked good but they haven't been replace for over 4 years. SHould I just replace since they're easy to do and I have it all apart? Also,if I do all this and it still misses, what's my next step? Thanks.
This is EXACTLY why you need to run your bike at least once a month during the "off season". You cannot "see" gum or sludge in your tank/carbs. Put some new gas in, plus 1/4 bottle of heat, and run your tank out. If you can, get some "open" runs and get on the throttle.
After that, you should be just fine.

Notto be a dick but, what do you mean you can't see sludge in the carbs, I took them apart and they're totally clean plus I haven't had a problem doing this for the last 8 years I've had the bike. I've done the same thing every year....fill the tank and add stabil, never a problem. Plus the gas is only 4 months old. I'll try your advice but what kind of "heet," the yellow bottle w/menthanol or the red with isopropyl alcohol?
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks guys! if you put stabil in it, then it's going to run rough for a while, after 2 tanks of '93 octane you should be alright.

Well, I put it all back together last nite and decided to do the plugs since everything was apart. It runs great today. I don't know what it exactly was. The carbs were immaculate so I'm leaning towards a bad plug since they haven't been replaced for a while. Case closed, I guess.
