Default Engine Knocking

Extremely loud knocking noise. Cant tell if its coming from top or bottom of engine. New cams were put in along with valve springs and all and had Rod bearings replaced due to one spinning. All this about four thousand miles ago.... Now its making a horrible knocking noise and didn't know if had any possible suggestions on what it could be. Dropped the oil pan and had silver and gold shavings along with a bolt.... Getting ready to drop the engine.... And suggestions on where to start looking??? Please let me know. Thanks (97 CBR 900RR)

OoOoOo that sux.. well the silver is from aluminum or steel, and the gold is more than likely copper. Maybe from a crush washer? Don't know if that makes any sense. Allow me to oversimplify if you will... Horrible knocking and metal shavings, yikes, damage has been done. Start on the bottom end? Oil pump/pickup maybe. Let us know

There was a loose bolt swimming in the oil pan?! Doh! ****!! Seems impossible that it's not related to the recent work done to it. Is the timing chain still in one piece? If you just had the top re-done, that's where I would start, pop the lid and see what's missing or broken. Man I'm sorry to hear about that.

Ya it sucks. And pulled the top end apart for the most part and everything looks clean and in place..... Didn't know if it could possibly have been a rod bolt or something. Such as if maybe if the guy that re did it didn't replace the bolts therefore when it tried to re-stretch it could have snapped off...That sound possible?

Is the bolt broken or did the nut work loose and come off? Either way, it sounds like the other part is still unaccounted for, probably near the crank, bouncing around and causing a horrific noise. What happened when you first heard it, were you riding?

Do you have any kind of relationship with the shop? What would happen if you took them the bolt and said 'look what you forgot to torque properly, you ****ing moron, you almost killed my engine'? Okay, maybe not like that, but the chances that this knock is unrelated to the work they did is just too remote.

I guarantee its a crank/rod issue...my 99 went in for a slight knock a year ago an come t find out # 3 rod bearing went out...the copper you see is froma bearing...make sure you change all four and go over every surface of your crank and rods very well even if you dont think any thing else is wrong...the mechanic at the shop only changed my #3 and figured every thing else was fine...the bike ran fine and quiet for about 30 miles and the knock came back, this time on my way home from work, next thing you know the motor started shuddering and the oil light would go on and off, before I knew it it was barely running on 2 cylinders before self terminating, come to find out #2 rod chewed 1/2 way through the journal, shattered the piston, took out the sleeve and litterally tied itself into a knot before letting go of the crank and ventilating my case with two golf ball sized holes, 1 front 1 back, upon dissassembly we found tha #4 rod was ready to go too....so long story short the shop had to eat a 3,500 dollar bill for used cases and brand new internals, the mechanic got fired for not being thorough, I scored two extra heads, and I pay cost for every thing I buy at that shop (if I have to pay anything at all), and no labor costs anymore. The only thing tho, from the fist knock untill I finally was able to ride it a gain was about a year, so in return for not suing the owner hooks it up...

one of the two bolts that hold your rod to the crank might have come out or broke and the bearing is probably catching hell and burned already...fix it soon cause when those motors let go they go, especially the bottom end...take that knock you hear multiply it by 100 add an off balance washing machine on spin cyclewith a couple of good sized rocks in the dryer add smoke and thats what the potential disaster sounds like. good thing you were smart enought to hang it up at the sign of trouble...
