crappy day...few questions
Ok so i picked up a 96 900 rr in feb. I recently pulled all the farrings and the tank to paint them black. (Bike was originally red and was painted purple with flames no further explinataion on why the paint had to be changed
) the frame was polished by the previous owner, so i decided to buff it to bring back the shine... all was great untill i got to the part of the frame near the kickstand where the hole is for the swing arm bolt when i noticed that it had a peice of alum tape on it. so i peeled the tape back and noticed that it my frame has a crack in it. so i need some opinions....have it welded or get a new frame.... if getting a new frame is the best options can any one tell me what year frames will allow all my 96 parts to properly bolt up to.

I think your making a snap decision here. A "newer" frame will run you at least $500 while welding will probably be no more than $65. Also consider the amount of work it takes to switch everything on your bike to another frame. You might want to mull this over a bit more and try to post a picture again. If I can see a picture I can flat out tell you whether the frame is salvageable. How can I tell you this? Because I own a TIG welder and have welded my 900 frame as well as three other motorcycles. If you have an extra 500-1000$ burning a hole in your wallet than by all means get a used frame, but you will need a weekend to transfer everything and some special tools to do the full job on your own properly. Also keep in mind that frames on Ebay and such are usually from totaled bikes and most have no title. Just my 2 cents.

thank you guys for your help. camaro i sent you a few pics. im def don't have the money to blow and hope it can be fixed than. my buddy races dirt bikeS and another is a pipe fitter and they are both concerned about the location of the weld being a high Stress point
The only reason I say 96-97 frame if you are going to get a different one is because it already has the two bolt holes for your gas tank, whereas 93-95 only have one hole. I'm not sure about 98-99
wow, that is pretty bad dude. How the hell did that happen? I was wrong, that isn't safe. It looks like that crack is all the way through and the only thing actually keeping it together is the lower frame brace, and through bolt motor mount. that thing must feel squirrely as hell. That can be welded, and if the welder is competent then it will hold. Unfortunately to weld that correctly you need to basically take the whole engine out and rear suspension. Given that fact, I would just replace the frame. Sorry to have wasted your time with the posting of the pics but now that I see it, replacing the frame is really the only option. Sucks man...I would consider giving the first owner a call and giving him a piece of your mind for dooping you and putting you at risk. People are suck A-Holes sometimes. Good luck, check on ebay, you will find something.
98-99 also has two bolt holes for gas tank.
