Default CBR900/919RR reliability

Are these bikes normally quite reliable? I'm thinking about buying one but I really need it to be reliable as it will be my only mode of transport aside from a push bike. Do they normally give problems after a certain mileage? What are maintenance costs like on these?

Main has been rediculously reliable. Never had a break down of any kind. Maintainance cost has been minimal.

My '97 has never had a problem outside of regular maintenance. A recent leak down test revealed the motor is like new. My mechanic said he has seen these motors go past 100K miles easy.

1. Is there much of a difference between the early models (early '90s) compared to the later models (late '90s-2001)? I understand that the later model ones have EFI instead of carb, but are there many other differences? Are many parts interchangeable between the different models?

2. I've heard these bikes can be awfully twitchy due to the 16" front rim, is that likely to cause problems such a tankslapper?

Find one closed to stock then your ok. The only bump you'll have with the 16' front is when buying tires...you'll need to buy them separately from the rear. Thing is not too many of us left out there...but that doesn't mean bike is not reliable...I'll take my bike cross country any day & clock a 3.1 easy....

Most Hondas is reliable...finding one near stock & un-mod...is important. Never laided... Some simples mod is ok...

I think the 929's and up were F.I.

I bought an F3 17" front wheel for my '97 and it was a direct bolt on. The front end feels much more stable and it allows you to buy a variety of different tires.

IMHO, the best mod for the 900 is the Erion triple clamp. It moves the fork out about 10mm or so and greatly improves the overall handling. This is probably the #1 reason why I have kept my 900 for over 10 years. It's just too much fun to ride.

I purchased the wheel online many years ago and all I have is a receipt that says "F3" wheel. I bought it thinking I would need to make custom spacers or something else and it turned out to be a perfect fit. I'm actaully using my 900's spacers. Everything bolts right on.

Very cool man! I'll keep my eyes open for sure! Either that, or a 929 front end I've been staring at o the local craigslist should also bolt right on!

I'd like to know if that works. And what offset the forks are on the 929 front end.
