Default 97 CBR - Tire options or upgrade wheel

All,

There seems to be a lot of discussion here on other year CBR's, but I have a 1997 CBR 900RR, was a beauty until I fishtailed last weekend and scratched up the fairing a bit. Well, it is still a beauty. That experience proved that I do need new tires, of course.

Now the questions.

1. My bike mechanic says he cannot find the right tires for this year and make bike. After seeing the discussion here, I guess he is not completely lying. Can you suggest a good rear tire please, make & model?

2. The front wheel is 16 inch and maybe I should go to 17 inch as suggested by a few posts here, but does anybody know that is a do-able straightforward replacement for the 1997 model? If not, does anybody suggest a tire make & model for the 16 inch wheel?

P.S: I can't believe it is mid April in the North East US and my bike is sitting in the garage.

Thanks in advance.

16" tire choices:

Street Motorcycle Front Tires Sportbike Tires - Motorcycle Superstore

16" tire isn't common enuff for the tire manufacturers to support it with their "hypersport" rubber . you'll need to opt for "sport" rubber or convert to 17".

I'm currently running Metzeler M3's.

That's really a shame you're having difficulty finding tires. I've never had trouble getting a decent selection, Im either lucky to have a good local garage or maybe it's just down to the fact Im in the UK . Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks guys, I will go with the Metzler M3 & M5. BTW, which M5 model do you recommend for the 1997 CBR? After my fish-tailing incident this weekend, I am being a bit too wary, but it's a good thing I guess.

I've got the Avon 3D's on mine. Love them... previoiusly I only ran Dunlops but the Avons are a good replacement since they come in a 16" front.

I am currently running Schinko 006 front and rear on my '97 & Schinko 006 on the front and 009 on the rear. I am quite happy with their performance. May not be the best out there but I got the set of 006 tires for 190 shipped

get f3 front wheel (not an f2 wont work) direct swap to the cbr 900rr rotors and spacers fit perfect. done it a couple of times myself. then you wont have to waste money buying expensive 16 inch front tires. get my tires off ebay, best prices around. got a set of v-rubber tires on mine for 153 a set. took them to a shop (wheels off of bike of course) and install them.
