96 motor in 94 need help quick
This is my first post on this board. I need an engine for a 94 90rr. and I found a good deal on a 96 motor that won't last long. From searching, I think the motor will bolt up but am not sure. Also what else will I need from the 96 to get it running?
I just did a '94 frame to '97 motor swap myself, here's what I learned.
Electrical- It's a straight bolt up. Use your existing harness/coils/etc. The '96 has a speed sensor on the drive sprocket cover for the speedo, but your '94 will bolt right up to the engine, store the '96 cover. The only thing I've found to be troubling is the temp sensor. While it does function, I feel it's reading lower than it should (it's always in the cooler ranges, and only rises about 20 degrees worth of needle direction even when I've got it hot enough to get the fan running). I'm ordering the '94 sensor to bolt in to see if this cures the temp issue (I busted the old one pulling it out of the old '94 motor....sigh). The '96 carbs also (I think, at least the '97 did) have a throttle position sensor which you will not use if you use the '96 carbs, just tie it out of the way.
Mechanical- The engine literally bolts in, no suprises in store in that respect. However, you will either need to find a '95-'97 footpeg assembly w/the shift linkage/lever, or bolt on the shifter from the '94 and get used to a race shift pattern (1st up, 2nd/3rd etc. down). I stayed with the race pattern, and am liking it better than a standard shift pattern...your choice. The stock exhaust will fit from the '94, no problems there.
Mine was pretty simple, took me about 6 hours from an empty frame to running engine.
Good luck!

Know what you mean....I spent a good month or two online scouring every CBR forum/BARF/CBRworld/Firblades.org/etc post I could find, and never did find a straight answer ie: "Yes, do it, it will work!!!!". Finally said the hell w/it, spent the $$$$, and lo and behold, it runs!!!
On a side note, held my breath and did a 300 mi. ride on it yesterday (left after work, got home at 1:00 am this morning, I still can't feel my legs), only problem I had was I ran out of gas (never did figure out the mileage beforehand....stupid). Thank God for reserve..heh. (44 mpg highway, now I know).
I gotta ask, how much did you find the replacement motor for......I spent 1100.00 on ebay for a pretty hot (cams/porting/higher compression) motor, drove from the SF Bay area to San Diego to pick it up (and back, same day, there's something wrong w/me
), so I figure total costs around 1250.00 or so. Just curious. Thanks!

about 700 for motor, runs good but history unknown. I may bore it 945 before I install it. I'm kinda rebuiding a bike. I bought a chasis and body now I'm on to the engine. Its really just a project for me to keep busy. probably will chrome it out and paint. I have a 954 that I ride regularly.
I'm getting the 97 engine b/c I could not find a 93-95 engine anywhere.

Heh, sounds familiar. Same here, bought the bike w/a bad engine ($1200.00), made a great project for the rainy months here in the Bay Area. Pretty much need to paint my lower fairings to call it done.
Hell of a price on the motor, oughtta haul if/when you bore it. I considered re-building the '94 and hot-rodding it a bit (#3 crank bearing seized, apperently a common problem), but I'm not comfortable splitting the cases, thus the '97 motor. Might turn the engine into a project for next rainy season, who knows.
Again, good luck!
