Default Replacing meter

Hello,

I bought my bike used about a year ago and the previous owner had done some modding to the meter. Well over time whatever they replaced, I was told the light is afterstock because my gauges glow orange, anyways the light inside the meter has melted the gauge faceplate and the case cover. I found another meter on eBay for a reasonable price.

My question to my fellow riders is, if I replace the meter with one from another bike does it log that bike's odometer readings? Or if I bring it to the dealer to install can they log what my odometer says and put that into the new one?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Yes, the mileage from the bike the meter was pulled from will show on your bike. The meter has essentially a small amount of flash memory with a small power source for it to retain the mileage. If you have the dealer install it, it might be reported to the DMV of your state. It'll then show up on the title that the mileage on the meter is incorrect. I think it says something along the lines of Not Actual Mileage on the title. You'd probably be better off doing it yourself and having something like that on the title.

The best thing to do is get a meter with the miles as close as possible to yours or lower. You will spend a little more but will be well worth it in the long run. Johnnyh

I know on a car they can change the mileage on the digital readout with just a laptop and a link to the cars computer. Not sure if a bikes the same or not but it would be a good question to just call the dealer and ask them anonimously if that can be done. If not just unplug and put the new gauge cluster in.

Yeah I went to the dealer and asked them. They said that whatever is on the other meter would be the milage that would show up. So, basically I'm screwed. Finding another meter is near impossible and changing it with an aftermarket would just be illegal so...thanks to the previous rider who messed it up.

Thanks for your help
