Question
As I posted in the Newbie section I purchased an 06 600RR two weeks prior to deploying. I only put 100mi on the clock before having to leave it. I know it was stupid but I wanted it. I did not properly store it. I mean it is in a garage and it is protected but I did not remove the battery or do anything else you would normally do to prepare it for long time storage. What all will I have to do when I get back to get the bike in rideable condition? I know I need to take it into the shop, my question is if I can get the thing started would it be really bad to ride it the 20mi to the shop or should I find a way to trailer it? Before everyone tells me I was stupid to do this, I already know. I wanted the bike and didnt want to wait to get one just in case I didnt come back. So, any advice would be extreamely welcome. Thanks guys. Oh by the way it will have been sitting approximately 8-10 months, if this helps.
You will want to change the fluids. The gas will be bad by the time you get back on it. Also might want to change the oil. I change my oil each summer after winter storage. I do run the gas out of it, but I put fuel stable in it prior to storage. Your battery might be dead after sitting that long, so may need to charge or replace it. I say trailer it if you can't change the fluids yourself. Dont want that gas running through your brand new motor. Hope that helps. Other members may have other suggestions. The important thing is that you make it back to ride! Take care of yourself while deployed! Good luck.
Will you be able to get home and ride it on leave? You might luck out and not have to do anything to the bike when you get back. If you experience problems when you get back I would first charge the battery, 2nd change the oil just to get the old oil out, and 3rd drain the gas, all of which you can do by yourself. I forget the military name but if you have access to a do it yourself repair garage that many of the active duty posts and bases have I recommend doing your own work there. While you are gone on your deployment order the Honda factory repair manual and read through it on your down time. You will be able to buy the manual and tools with the money you save by not going to the dealer. If the bike does start up and you insist on taking it to a dealer then maybe first fill the tank with come injector cleaner and the rest with fresh gas.
Maybe I missed this, but how long will it be sitting? If it's only a few months, I'll bet my life that you'll be able to walk up to it, put in the key and press the start button and she'll fire right up (although she might cough for a minute)...next time add some fuel stabilizer though.
