K+N Needs Power Commander?

K+N Needs Power Commander?
Someone was saying something to me this weekend about needing a power commander to use a K+N filter in my '04 600RR, is there any truth to this?Any thoughts?
I understand that the K+N would allow more air into the mixture, causing better gas milage, I guess. The power commander would optimize the use of the K+N, but I can run a K+N w/o the power commander, correct?
I do plan on getting a power commander, but will probably one of the last things I get, it's just not in the budget right now.

RE: K+N Needs Power Commander?
No you don't "NEED" a PC... A PC would help overall, even on a totally stock bike, but if you look at the available maps they all pretty much list stock and/or aftermarket filter - There are no real differences between the two.
False &False.A K&N will not allow any more air through it than a clean stock filter, there or you’re not going to get any performance or economy benefits. The only real benefit is you're getting with a K&N is a washable, reusable filter.

+1 bmc, k&n use oil i nte filter... stay away from that. unless you have a dual sport of somthin. only thing i dont like about bmc is that they are made of cotton... why i dont like cotton you might ask. well it feels soooo weird... gives me the *******. but performance wise its the best.
