You should get a court date notice at least 30 days prior. Remember, take the courses BEFORE the court date. Even if you don't get probation before judgment (PBJ) with a mandatory driver improvement course taking the course before casts you in a positive light, showing that you've taken steps towards "improving your driving habits". If found guilty, this will help the Judge decide if he's going to assess the full amount of points or reduce them. 1-3 points is much better than 5 (depending on how your state's point system works) and the amount of money you'll save on insurance will pay for the top-tier lawyer you've retained. Also, in some state's motor vehicle departments they require a mandatory hearing once you reach a certain number of points, and you face a possible suspension. Hopefully, it wont come to that in your case but I want you to know all the different ways it could branch out.
