nope, i change the filter/oil EVERY 3k. when i did put in the 3qts it was too high (yea, i know what lines to look at) and my buddy at his shop said "you've got a little too much oil in here".

 

I center my bike on the stands vertically and add the oil until it touches the top line. I then run it till it heats up a little, shut it off, and the oil settles back in below the line.

And unless you have thick white smoke pouring out when you start the bike, I don't think there is such a thing as "a little too much oil."
