I was interested in getting a damper for my bike. I learned alot from this discussion. Both sides with their PROS & CONS were helpful. THANKS!!!

 

For the record, All new GSXR's (600, 750 amd 1000)from 06 and up include an OEM damper, as well as the 07 600rr's. I get the impression some of you are so good at riding that all you need is a frame with wheels, motor and gas tank.. I applaud you and your "skillz".. heh. It never ceases to amaze me the advice some people give to someone asking serious questions. Dampers are proven. To tell a rider "You dont need a damper if you know how to control it and correct it" is like telling a person "you dont need winter tires on your car if you know how to properly react to sliding and ice".. Most likely the same people saying you dont need one (and I reiterate, you dont NEED one, but they are very nice to have) are the ones who would rather spend their $$ on spiked bar ends and ride around on used race tires all season..

I for one like anything I can get to avoid those butt-puckering momments.. Call me a less talented rider if you must, lol

 

and you justgave proofthat you probably do need a damper due to lack of skills from this one statement...the trick is you don't try to control and correct it...have you been paying attention at all or do you always fall asleep in class...I got to go now and polish my spiked, chrome studded bar ends

There was a guy we ride with that used to say the exact same thing bro so Im not ****ting on you.. We always preached to him about how he should get one just incase and he always shook it off saying he knew how to handle them.Then he came out of a corner and got into nice slapper which happened in an instant. Just as quick as it happened he was on the ground and the bike went crashing down the highway. After 2 months in the hospital for multiple fractures including both femers (sp?) a hand, 1 ankle, and a few ribsfollowed byabout 8 months of rehab, he got another bike for this season.. First mod he did was a damper.

It's one thing to know what to do, its another to do it in that split second that it happens..

 

The 07 6RR comes with dampner because of the geometry was revised from 05/06. It has a better power to weight ratio, shorter wheel base, andthe rake angle is smaller. Without the dampner the bike will probably be a littletwitchy. The suspensions are so compliant on our bikes it's like saying you need training wheels to help keep your balance beforeyou getgoing. You really don't need a dampner. On the street anyway but ridingto the edge ofyour limits at thetrack is a different story.

Although this is anunfortunate story, I think you may be leaving out some very important details...are you saying he was taking a turn on the street at a normal speed and instantly went into an unpreventable tank slapper? You write "corner" yet write "highway" in the next sentence...obviously he wasn't on a track (controlled environment), but on a public highway that can have all kinds of things in the road (bumps, holes, liquids, debris) just waiting to take out an overly aggressive rider. The sad part is he got seriously hurt and didn't learn anything from his incident...he ran right out and bought a damper, which indicates he was blaming the machinery for the crash and not owning up to being over aggressive on unpredictable, public roads...

Well I guess your just better then all of us then arent you?? You must be one of those riders that never goes above the posted limit at all or revs above 5000.. You dont have to be a squid to enjoy a nice stretch of highway every now and then..

Obviously it will never get through to you, so either way I reccomend a damper.. Like I said originally, you dont need it but its good to have.. Call it what you want.

 

This is an answer to a real tank slapper. Do you have any idea the kind of energy involved in this? If you grap hold of the bars (unless you weigh about 1500 pounds) the bike will fling you off the bike or the bike will immediately go down. If you think about it, this makes alot of sense.

 

Wow. I am new here since I just picked up a 600rr...Bunch of flamers LOL! One guy here is so full of himself that I must say he must be a rising star in MotoGP or something...Yeah I thought so. Take a step back and just offer up your input and don't put anyone else's opinion down. As far as damper. It is good to have but it really depends on your riding. If you go to the track and go through a lot of twisties then by all means do so. If you just ride on occasion and not as hard as others (you'll know if you are always in the back) then it is not a must. If you have the cash to burn...Then get one. I have one on my 636 and none on my CBR...The CBR steering is wayyyy more tame than the 636 so I see no need for one...Right now.
