won't start after bad carb sync

Hey all,
I have a 1999 fx which was running rough when I bought it. A mechanic suggested I do a carb sync. The advice was to take #3 carb as the standard and balance off that (learned later that #4 was the right one!). I used a balancing meter and thought everything was sorted but when I went back to start it the next day, not a sausage. The long and the short of it, I eventually tightened up all the sync screws and turned them all back 2 3/4 turns to try and find a point at which it might fire up. With the choke fully on, it fired up but as soon as I try to turn the choke off, it dies. If anybody has any ideas, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Hey hamlin6 thanks for responding. The original problem was bad vibrations through the handlebars and footrests at idle and when on the move. The mechanic suggested I do the carb sync, he didnt do any work himself on the bike. The idea was to get that job done (how hard could it be!!), at least one job was out of the way and then take it from there. The theory at the moment now is if I can get it running with the choke off I could sync the carbs properly and then move on from there. Is there a standard setting for the sync screws?
