Default timing chain

Hey Guys, its been awhile...

Long story short, I made the mistake of trading my 00 F4 for a 03 400ex (mistake!)....the kid wants to trade back, but being it now has 30xxx on the motor he says there is a timing issue and that the timing chain should be replaced. He stated he was traveling on the highway and the chain came off the gears....

Can anyone let me in on any information I should check on? How hard is it to replace the timing chain properly? How expensive is it?

im not sure about bike motors but in most cases if a timing chain or belt breaks you can easily trash a motor

Does the engine run now? I don't know off-hand whether these engines are interference or non-interference engines. If they're non-interference, then the timing chain coming off just means the engine died. If they're interference, then there's almost no way the chain came off w/o significant internal damage, to the point that it may run poorly now, or not at all.
