Default speedometer problem

Alright so for some reason whenever I first start up my bike (2000 f4), the speedometer just doesn't work. I could be doing 50mph down the street and the speedo just reads 0. It doesn't move! It only starts registering the speed after the bike warms up to where the temp gauge is about halfway. After that, the speedo works like normal. But then again if I let the bike sit a while after it warms up and restart and ride again, the speedo dies again even though the temp is up there still. What does everyone think the problem might be? Oh, and the speedo is analog with a needle, not digital. Thanks for any help.
