Default New chain and sprocket

Hi all

recently became the owner of a CBR600F4 after passing my test back in March.

I took on my first chain maintenance this weekend as I could see the chain was quite dirty and definitely needed tensioning. As I disassembled the front sprocket cover I was shocked by the mass of grease built up - it was literally caked in there and took some time to clean.

Q1 - is this normal or is it a sign of a previously poorly maintained chain.

Q2 - the chain is showing some surface rust, is this ok for continued use?

Q3 - I’ve seen this sprocket and chain set, would anyone be able to comment on the quality and price or provide recommendation?

New biker so apologies if these are newbie type questions.

Chain maintenance is always fun.
Q1 - Normal esp if wax chain lube is used
Q2 - Some surface rust is fine, main issue is does the chain run smoothly with no kinking and make sure the sprocket teeth are in good order with no hooking.
Q3 - Looks fine to me.
No worries about the questions, keep them coming and take it easy out there.

If you assume everyone is out to get you you won't go far wrong.

Plenty of slow speed maneuvers and braking in car parks to hone your skills

on the contrary. it usually indicates that the chain was frequently lubricated. as the bike was ridden, the lubrication gets slung off the chain into the front sprocket area causing a build up of thick sludge.

its probably ok, but it really depends on how much there is and how long its been there for. if you intend on replacing the set, then I would say run it while you wait for the new stuff to arrive.

JT makes quality stuff and the X-ring chain is definitely good to have.

Yeah, X-ring chains have less drag than previous-generation O-ring chains.

I oil my chain every other tank. Clean it once per month.

Measure then and verify not too worn.
