Default Coolant & oil change question

we have some rainy days coming ahead here so what better time then to do routine maintenance.

I was wondering, on the new oil filter and crush washer is shiny on one side and dull on the other I remember the guy at the store telling me one side was suppose to be facing the bike.

Another question is I think i'm looking at my coolant overflow tank. It's a bit low what is the procedure for filing it. Do I add the difference into the radiator and try to get the level on the overflow tank to reach full, or do I dump all the fluid and start new. Any DIY with pictures for this? Bike was cold when I checked fluids incase that matters.

I like to put fresh coolant in once at the beginning of each season topping off the overflow tank throughout. I use water wetter and distilled water in a pre-mixed jug, and do coolant stuff when the bike is cold. I warm up the bike for oil changes just be careful.

The overflow tank is just that, overflow. You need to have extra in there to account for the coolant expanding/ contracting as it heats and cools, but as long as there is coolant in the overflow, then the radiator SHOULD be full. You can add the extra coolant to the overflow if it needs it. I dont remember if the overflow tank has markings for checking it cold and hot (most cars do), and the level will be lower when cold.

+1 to CJardine on changing oil hot. Again, it can be done either way, but the oil thins out and makes it come out quicker (plus I feel like you can get more of the old oil that way.) Can't help you on the crush washer. There probably is a way that it is "supposed" to go, but it really shouldn't matter. Brass washers are used on brake lines, and they dont matter which way, and they hold a lot more pressure! Someone PLEASE let me know if I am wrong on this though!

I checked the manual. it doesn't say.the orientation of the washer. that's why I figured I would ask.

Chris, The softer more porous side (dull side) of the washer should be oriented toward the oil pan. Use proper torque specs per manual to tighten.

Re: Radiator: Yes, add radiator fluid to your overflow bottle to keep proper levels. If the radiator is low, it will draw from the overflow bottle to keep full. Just routinely check the level & add as necessary.
