Default 2001 F4i wont hold idle, dies after 30 seconds?

Just as the title states my 2001 f4i won't hold idle at 1000rpms if I sit at a light for more than a minute or two. It drops to 500rpms and then struggles and dies.

If I give it gas it obviously won't die so I just kept the throttle at about 2 grand, just wondering what the problem could be, I just bought the bike a month ago and replaced the battery already. It has 38k on the clock but has been taken care of and is in good shape. (took it a friend that is a mechanic at family powermotorsports)

Any ideas would be helpful, thanks guys!

Post this in the f4i forum for better help

You should try bumping it up to 1200rpm via the adjusment **** on the left side of the bike

How long has the bike been parked?

If there is crap gas in the tank then dump it out and put in fresh gas with some carb cleaner. Ask your mechanic buddy if he has a carb sync gage, and if you can use it, and if he'll help (supervise) you using it. I don't advocate asking mechanic friends for free work (I've been there) but most will tell you what to do and watch so you don't screw it up.

No Carbs on the F4i.

I am not sure what Honda calls for as far as IDLE on that bike but F4's are supposed to idle at 1300-1500. Now I am not smart but I don't believe there is much difference between the two engines except the obvious hardware for FI, which makes me assume the idle should be comparable based on the fact that displacement, and fuel needs would remain the same. I would crank up the idle some and go from there. When it is cold and mine idles around 1000 it almost invariable cuts off.

Shouldn't the computer control the idle speed?

Well like the others guys said you should have posted it in the right forum, but there is an idle adjustment just like the f4 and it is around the same rpm 1300 + or - 200. The real question is does it start correctly and if so at what temp does the idle drop out. It could be caused by old plugs, dirty air filter, or it may be in need of a valve job if they havent been done. At that mileage they should have been at least checked twice by now. Give us a few more fine details about the situation and we'll help you diagnose it better.

Edit: On another thought if it is holding seems to hold idle when first coming to a light and then eratically drops like your post suggests then its a good possibility your FPR is gone and flooding the engine out.
