2000 F4 stalls when coasting
Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and motorcycling and I bought a 2000 honda cbr f4 a few days ago. It ran perfectly and only had a few scuffs on the right side. The guy even drove it over for me, which was a 40 minute drive on the highway and city.
I went to go drive it today and practice in my back yard so I started it up, it warmed up and idled at 1500 rpms and then I started going in my back yard. Well I can get it going with no problems and I stayed in 1st gear. Then pulled in the clutch to coast and the clutch would release just fine, but then the rpms drop way down and it would sputted down there then die. I can give it gas while it's doing this, but it would just go back down. It restarts ok too, just have to give it a small amount of gas.
I have no idea when the plugs were changed last, when the oil was changed, and when the fuel filter was changed so I'm thinking it's one of those problems.
When I bought it I noticed he had the idle set up around 3000-4000 rpms, but I put it back down and it was fine idling.
It's my first bike and I can't wait to drive it and practice on it and this is kind of depressing.

There are no maintenance records. The guy said he checked it out before he bought it but who knows. It has 21k miles. I think it sat for two or three months maybe and the gas might be old. The manual choke I just use it to start the bike then I mess with the idle screw to raise and lower the idle and leave the choke all the way down. Is there something else I should be doing?
I rode it a bit after I posted this and I noticed when it starts to die, if I rev it once or twice it returns to normal idle. I'm thinking it's not getting enough gas so maybe the fuel pump? I heard you can bypass the pump and just gravity feed it. Do you think I should try it and test if it works?

Do you have a copy of the factory Honda service manual? If not, download it here... Honda CBR 600 F4 Shop Manual - Go Fast Video. The manual outlines troubleshooting procedures. You could have a single issue or combination of issues.
To that, you could have old/bad gas, fuel feed/pump issue, bad fuel filter, carbs that need cleaning/adjusted, etc.
Yes, you can bypass your FP to test. Give it go.
Once you set your idle, leave it alone. It should be set to 1300-1500, depending on climate. I tend to keep mine btwn 1400-1500.
Hope you get it sorted asap. F4's really are great bikes. Unfortunately, some new owners get a bike that's had poor maintenance or neglected a bit.
