Trying to Isolate Electrical Problem
Ok, here's the long explanation. Just bought a 98 F3 that I really don't know much about. It is not running. The previous owner tried to jump start the bike but connected the jumper cables backwards. I bought it with hopes of it just being a blown main fuse. Turns out someone over the years replaced the 30amp main fuse with a 40amp fuse. Needless to say, it did not burn out quick enough. So by looking at the burn marks all around the R/R and R/R plug, I know it is fried. I checked the resistance between all my alternator cables, and it all seemed to check out fine. I also checked my connections at the ICM, and visually nothing looked fried. I have also checked out the sticky https://cbrforum.com/forum/general-t...-system-51691/ and my battery is charged and good. I did the current leakage test and found that when my burnt up R/R is connected, it reads about .60mA. When I disconnect the burnt up R/R, it reads zero. Can I assume from all of this that the only thing to get damaged was the R/R and I should just be able to install a new one and replace the burnt connections and be good to go?
It is quite common for the r/r's to go bad on these bikes. i dont know if the backwards jumper hookup would fry the r/r, but it is a good possibility that the r/r was already bad before he came close to it with the cables. (A bad r/r was probably the reason he needed to jump it in the first place!) The burn marks around the r/r plug are quite common traits of a dead r/r, so im not sure if you should be presuming that this was a result of the 40A fuse mix-up.
If the crossed cable incident happened while the 40A fuse was installed, hopefully the amount of power was so strong that it wouldnt have mattered anyways, and everything else will be good to go. definitely replace it with the proper 30A fuse. I would say to really inspect the r/r to make sure that it has not already been replaced, but if the backside looks wavy or you see any burns to it, get an upgraded r/r or do the GSXR swap as a starting point..

here's a picture of the plug. I went ahead and ordered a new male plug to re-wire into the harness and a new R/R. I know that something is up, because even after I replaced the main fuse, with a fully charged battery, once the ignition is turned to the on position, nothing happens. so no power is even getting to the ignition. thanks for the advice Will. if anyone else has ever had experience with something like this, i'd appreciate some more insight. thanks.

all right, I got a confession to make. Just tried to start it again after fully charging the battery...and it started. So I guess it turns out it was just the main fuse. Now I need to figure out how to get it running right. It will start and idle, but as soon as I give it gas, it just dies.
