ok so i had some issues with my head on my 96 f3. It had a bent valve which was replaced and i just got the engine back together. I was trying to fire it to make sure everything was ok and it wont run. It will fire occasionally but at random. I am thinking that perhaps the exaust cam could be off by a tooth because as i was trying to crank it I noticed fire coming out of the #1 cylinder exhaust (the headers arent on yet). so i guess my question is are these symptoms correct with my diagnosis? I dont want to tear the engine cover off again unless i have to. any thoughts are appreciated!!!

It's hard to say whether or not fire coming out of the exhaust right at the exhaust port is an indication of an improperly timed cam, but if it's been apart, it is certainly something to suspect. If you have the crank in the right spot, then there should be no question as to whether it's right or wrong.
