sounds like a problem i had with my old kawi 500. i had a nasty vacuum leak where the petcock seals had went bad (but my petcock was operated by vacuum). sounds like you cuttin the fuel off, it leans it up enough for it to run good till it sucks all the fuel out the lines. just elaborating...
