Default Throttle cable removal problems - help needed

My bike has had an extremely stiff throttle since I bought it. Its so stiff and a bit gunky that it won't return to idle properly. I decided that with the rain it was time to take care of that.

According to the service manual, you remove the two screws from the housing that has the start and kill switch and pull the two halves away. Then you remove the throttle cables from the barrel.

Here's the issue. I removed the two screws. The top half lifted away. The bottom half wont come off no matter what I do. Near as I can tell you have to have both halves off so that the barrel will slip closer putting slack in the throttle cables and allow them to come off. As it stands now I have no idea what to do.

I took the air box off down to the carbs and looked at that end. No idea how to get the cables loose there short of removing the carbs which I REALLY don't want to do. Ive been working at the top for an hour and am no closer to getting those throttle cables loose there.

I'm at a loss. and about ready to smash the damn thing to get it out of the way. Any suggestions from someone who has been down this road before?

Update - I got the barrel off of the bar by removing the bar from the bike. Problem is that the barrel (sleeve?) is still completely and solidly attached to the throttle cables and the bottom half of the housing with the switches and I CANT GET IT OFF! For that matter I can't really see short of removing the carbs how it is physically possible to remove the throttle cables from the sleeve. Much less do as the manual says and just casually remove them.

There has to be some simple answer that I'm missing here. Help me out people!

Sure, here's some various photos of the issue.

Near as I can tell the issue all boils down to that I need some cable slack to get it out of the sleeve and I have no idea how to get any.

Looks like you're going to have to loosen the cables at the carbs. I think it takes a 10mm wrench and just loosen them enough to pull them out of their "slots". If that doesn't work, you'll have to continue and take them off the carbs first which is a pain. Let me know if the first way works, and if it doesn't, I'll dig up some pictures to help

You would be much better off starting a new thread in the forum for your particular bike.
