Default Steering Lock

Greetings! After a successful resolution to my Throttle stop screw issue, I figured I toss out another one...

My steering lock doesn't work. I figured it might be because the steering column may not have been turned all the way to the left, so I slacked the left handle bar adjuster off to allow the steering column to turn all the way to the left (without the handle striking the tank) and it still will not lock (can't turn it to the lock position in the ignition). Any thoughts/suggestions as to cause or fix? Where exactly is this "lock"? Is the mechanism by which it's triggered manual or electronic relay? I poured over the service manual, but cannot seem to find a reference to it.

As always, thanks in advance!

Thomas

The steering lock is a mechanical lock. When you turn your handle bars to full right or left lock, you can then turn the ignition key in a counter-clockwise direction while pressing down on the key. This will cause a pin to come out the bottom of the ignition mechanism and engage with a part of the bike frame. There are no electronics involved other than the fact that you're turning your ignition key.

As for your handle bars, they should not be able to touch your tank in either direction. They should come close, but not touch. If they do touch, then there is something wrong. Could be the forks are twisted, or more likely the clip-on's are not mounted on the forks correctly.
