Default Smoking Rectifier

Hello everyone,

I just got a '95 F3 that was non-running. New plugs and fresh gas, bike started right up. I rode if for about 2 hours this morning when it just shut off while doing 45mph. Pulled over, checked it out, eventually found that the fuse in the starter solenoid had popped. Got a new one, and it instantly popped when I put the connector back on. Poked around some more, didn't see any obvious shorts, so I tried another fuse. This one lasted a little longer, then I notices smoke coming out of the rectifier and then the fuse blew. I disconnected the rectifier, new fuse, bike started without an issue and i rode it home. When I got home, I checked the wire harness with a multimeter and the readings were all what they should be.

My question is, obviously the rectifier is bad, since it burnt up, but was that the cause of my problems? I don't want to replace the rectifier, only to have it burn up again. Any ideas? If it matters, my battery is charged to 12.4v.

Yes, if the Regulator/Rectifier shorts out, it will blow the 30A fuse. It's a common flaw on the F3's and others as well.
