520 kits have a bad rep cuz they used to be made of low-grade aluminum back in the day. They were supposed to last a prof racer one day at the track and be thrown away. MODERN 520 kits last MUCH longer (5 - 6k miles if you buy a GOOD one).
I generally shy away from prepackaged kits, just cuz you always get shafted on one of the parts. They'll sell you a pair of vortex sprockets and then a no-name chain or something. If you can get all high end stuff like Vortex, Supersprox, DID, RK, EK, etc, then go for it.

Vortex rear sprockets are junk.Don't last for squat.Look nice, but are NOT worth the money. You'll trash it in two months.
PBI makes a nice rear sprocket,so does Sprocket Specialists.
A 520 chain will serve you just fine,as long as you get a reputable brand (DID,RK,Regina etc) and keep it cleaned/lubed.Don't use Chain Wax on anything unless you're a glutton for punishment.

I've heard that myself, never had a chance to personally verify. I got over 10k off my last Vortex front sprocket, but that's a different story.
i did a 520 conversion when i first got my bike just because it was the cool thing. i ditched it very fast, i was always replacing chains, i was even buying the best chains i could, so after that i got sprockets from a 91 to 94 f2 and did a 530 conversion and i have never been happier with it. chains last forever
