Did the same thing about two weeks ago on my 97 but the oil light is only on when the key is in the on position, once I start the bike the light goes right off. Is that how yours is or does it stay on even when the bike is running? Anyone know why mine (and possibly his would do this?) Also, I'm assuming you changed the filter too? If not I read somewhere that it's 3.4 quarts I believe for just the oil change, 3.9 if you change the filter as well, it might be on because it's over filled if that's the case.

AS for your light being on when you turn the key on then going off when you start thats normal. It goes off when oil pressure is built. As far as it staying on while running is bad news. Did you happen to remove the pick up tube/screen? If so did you replace the gasket with a new one between it and pump?

When i bought the motor for my bike it was drained of oil for years and set on its side. When i first got it running the oil light stayed on for like a minute. i didnt hear any ticking or knocking but then the light went out when the motor warmed up. Since that time its been fine. When i first start it the light shuts off right away.

If i remember correctly its 3.9 qts with filter.

no when we changed the pan we just took the old pan off and cleaned the area so that the new pan would sit fine then put the new pan on
