Default Oil leak above/near gear shift lever. 1996 SMJ.

Hi there and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Went to take my bike out for an early morning ride and I noticed oil leaking from an area right above the gear shift lever. Checked oil and it is between the two lines. The concrete floor is somewhat porous so the oil did not pool but left a stain.
This bike had a major overhaul during the summer since it had been sitting for several years. Many things were replaced/serviced, from engine to cosmetic.

Grateful,
Dennis

Put a white plastic bag under the drip to give you an accurate idea how big the leak is. It will soak into paper/concrete and spread making it look worse than it actually is.

Not sure what will be causing it, trace the oil back to make sure it's not coming from higher up, the bike leans to that side on the kick stand so that's a possibility.

It looks like it is coming from higher up although I am hoping that it is the gear shift rod.

If the cam cover is a similar design to the 1000F Hurricane, it might just be the rubber cam cover seals leaking.

I had a leak that was a bit hard to find after a rebuild (new tranny) because the oil was so clear. Long story short, Turned out I forgot to install the o-ring for the speed sensor. Check around the sensor. It's hard to reach and check out if you're not familiar. Remove the tank and you'll find on the top of the back side of the engine.

Thank you all. I took it to the shop today.
Hopefully they can let me know soon so I can get some ridding in during the break from school. I am a teacher.

A leak detection kit will contain a fluid that you add to the oil, a set of UV filtering goggles and a UV pen light. With it, you run the engine with a little of the fluid, turn off the lights in the garage and use the pen light and goggles to find the source of the leak. Now you know where to fix. The shop will charge you 1-2hrs labor just to find the leak.

Well it turned out to be a leak from the fuel valve/petcock. Seems the dripping fuel was mixing with dirt/oil from the 20 year old engine and causing the leak to look like an oil leak. Whew! $60 repair.

Grateful for the replies,

Dennis
