Mounting/Cutting for Frame Sliders
I'm wanting to get some frame sliders and see where they mount on the F3. I know I'll have to cut the fairings which isn't a big deal to me since I'm painting the bike anyways. But my question is from the looks of the fairings and where the frame slider would mount. I'd have to cut the maintnence cover along with the fairing along the edge.
I don't really want to weaken the maintnence covers and am worried about he lower fairing lining up.
Am I missing somethere here?
I guess if you have pictures of your frame sliders mounted that would be good.
Most likely getting Vortex frame sliders but open to others.

I installed the frame sliders on my F3 shortly after I bought it in September. It had already fallen over while the previous owners had it, and it certainly could happen again. I've got some photo's of how I did it. I decided to use the laser method. Basicly you set up a laser pointer exactly perpendicular to the motor mount bolt (with the faring off)where the frame slider goes. Then put the faring back on and the Red Dot points to where you cut a hole with a whole saw and drill. One key thing is to not let the bike move while you're putting the farings back on. If it does, then you'll drill in the wrong place. It goes something like this. I don't have photos of the hole (pun intended) process, as I was doing this alone.
[ol][*]Set the bike up on stands against something that's not going to move. The wall is good.
[*]Take off the fairing and mount a laser so it points at the center of the bolt. The laser needs to be the same level as the bolt and as close to perpendicular to the bolt as possible. It's hard to see, but there is a red dot in the center of the bolt head.
[*]Put the farings back on then look for the dot. It was easier to see after I put some tape on it. It's a little tough to seea red laser against a red bike.
[*]I used a center punch to mark the dot for a pilot hole, drilled it and that was pretty much it.
[*]After it was finished. Not too bad for a first timer.
[*]The other side.

I didn't use any fancy brand of sliders. Just the least expensive ones that I could find on ebay. They cost less than $25 shipped. Someday in the not too distant future, I'll get it repainted and put fresh decals on it. It'll be just like new.
I hope this helps you.

Thanks. You da Man
I also like the rear tail fairing. My 96 has the F2 fairings because I think mine was made in the beginning of the year befor they changed it. I think I'll switch mine to the later models.

another easy way to get the pilot hole stick some play dough on the inside of the fairing about where the hole goes .mount it back line up the holes press down when u take off the fairings you have the center in the play dough
I ordered some today. LP(Lockhart Philips) for $50(2). I wanted Vortex but they didn't show it for the F3. Just the F4/F4i and up. I'm sure the bolts would have matched but didn't want to take the chance.
I was talking with a buddy of mine who use to race CBR600 F2/F3s and he said what he did is figure out the general area of bolt and drill into it. Then once he located the bolt he'd remove it and place the frame slider on until it hit the fairing. He'd then draw a cirdcle and put a hole saw to it. He said it worked perfect everytime. I think I'll try that.
