Looking at a CBR. Thoughts?
Hey all.
I found a local lawn ornament that I'm looking to pick up as a new project. Don't know much about it (Been riding Suzuki's and Kawi's for years. never had a Honda). Didnt get to talk to the owner. She is a friends neighbor and we went over and looked at it today. Its in pretty rough shape, but if the price is right it may be a good buy.
From looking at it, I can tells its been stunted (by an apparently not very good stunt Driver). Doesn't appear to have and high speed damage though. Swing arm and motor look in good shape from a quick visual. Right fork is leaking. Bad seal maybe. Other than that I know nothing about it. Year, model, what have you. I believe the bike belonged to a family members of the current owner so she won't be much help.
Anyways, What can you guys tell me about it. I was thinking of offering her $200????

It's a 97-98 CBR600F3. You could part it for more than the 2 bills.
Expect to change both fork seals, I'd do the steering-head too.
If it's been stunting, they've taken a beating.
Front forks stock have the clips, flush to the top of the tubes.
You'll probably be changing the r/r, a notorious flaw in the CBRs.
Expect to change all of the fluids and a complete brake-systems overhaul.
If the engine is sound, you'll still be doing a complete carb clean/sync.
Don't forget the return to street sprocket/chain if you are heading in that direction.
As you said, the bones look good. If you can keep the total cost below $15-1800,
you're looking at a decent buy. Gotta be a sound engine, though, or all bets are off.
Then, just part it and make a profit.
I'm assuming you have the tools/skills to pull it off.
If you have to farm out the labor, take a walk and keep looking.
