This is my first post on the Forum. Today I purchased a 96' CBR 600 F3 for $350.00. Currently the bike isn't running and has been sitting for about 2 years. The fairings are weathered but frame and engine look to be in good shape. Exhaust headers seem to have oxidation on them. what is the first step I need to take to get this bike running again? I understand ill have to drain the gas tank and clean the carbs. Tires, brakes, and battery will need to be replaced. What are some other key things that will be needed to get the engine running again? Thank you all in advance and I look forward to your advice.

 

Well I'd say the 1st thing is to not to give into temptation and try and start it and take it for a spin until you've given your new toy the once over.
I'd say a safe bet is to insure the tank is really clean on the inside. Also pulling the carbs and clean them. If the bike has set for 2 years, you will need to actually pull them and be meticulous. Seafoam or other products will more than likely just cause you frustration and delay getting her on the road.
I'd replace the oil, coolant, brake fluid and possibly the fork fluid, (but that's not a given that it will need to be changed).
Like you said, you will probably need a new battery.
And I'd check the plugs.
Once you have it started, be super mindful of various leaks caused by dry rotted hoses.

Hamlin has hit it on the head. I like to pre-lube the cylinders if its been sitting for a long time. Remove the plugs and add a tbsp or so of oil into each cylinder. Turn the engine by hand (either by the crank bolt, or leaving the bike in gear and pushing it). Just to get some oil on those dry walls so you don't score them too bad.

 

+1 on the pre lubing the cylinders Corrupt. great point dry starts are killer for high compression engines.

we on the same exact boat.same bike year and model. same situation and setting(mines been sitting for 8 years). except I got mine for 800. Looking forward to other ppl's reply also

 

I'd probably go for filters as well, there cheap enough to preemptively change them and could save you some headaches, especially if the tank is full of rust or debris
