That's correct on the petcock position.
I think the relay and the contacts are the only things that can go wrong with them. At least they're the only things I've ever heard of people having problems with.

The relay is on the right side of the bike right next to the R/R. The contacts are under the black cover on the fuel pump.

If you have the manual downloaded, check out page 18-16. The fuel cut off relay pictured is the relay that essentially tells the pump whether or not it should be on.

This is the site I got my manual from. (www.stephygee.com)
The R/R is the regulator/rectifier. Converts the AC current out of the stator to a DC current which allows the battery to be charged.
And I'm not sure if it's common. I know it's possible, just like it's possible for the contacts to go out. That's why I eventually said screw it and converted everything over to gravity feed, gave me a lot more confidence and piece of mind.

ok thanks. well im trying to keep the bike factory as i can, but if the switch doesnt fix my bike i might have to do the gravity thing. after looking at the switch tho.. the contacts look really wore out and corroded. it has to be the problem. that switch has been on there since 96 lol

If you download that manual there is a little bit of a diagnostics walkthrough I'm pretty sure. Start with the switch though, it sounds like it could use them anyway. If that doesn't do the trick then head for the relay. Chances are it's one of the two. Good luck to you and keep us updated on if the switch fixes it.
