The R/R is the regulator/rectifier. Converts the AC current out of the stator to a DC current which allows the battery to be charged.
And I'm not sure if it's common. I know it's possible, just like it's possible for the contacts to go out. That's why I eventually said screw it and converted everything over to gravity feed, gave me a lot more confidence and piece of mind.

If you download that manual there is a little bit of a diagnostics walkthrough I'm pretty sure. Start with the switch though, it sounds like it could use them anyway. If that doesn't do the trick then head for the relay. Chances are it's one of the two. Good luck to you and keep us updated on if the switch fixes it.
