it is a timer to keep your hid headlight from turning on when you turn the key...

having your hid go on off on every time you attempt a start is bad and kills the life of the hid bulb and ballast.

basically you put the key in and on, (headlight stays off) get the engine running, and depending on what type of delay you used or have it set to (in seconds), the headlight will then turn on on its own...

As far as I know, the relay mod is a way to power the ballasts/bulb with clean power straight from the battery instead of solely through the stock light bulb harness.

Are you sure about the timer thing? My light stays on the entire time my key is on. My bike starts right up all the time and I never have to mess with turning the key on and off. Even if you do need to attempt to start it more than once, the lights shouldn't turn off if you leave the key on.

na. that's inaccurate. it is a mod to keep the light OFF during initial power. and even when i had my stock bulb, key on =light on, start button pressed=light off, start button released=light on. thats why people do this mod, to keep the light off giving time to start the bike so once the light is on, it stays on...even if the light did stay on through turning over, im sure that would be even worse on the ballast and bulb given the power fluctuation through turning over to start up.

Instead of spending tons of money and time on making that mod ( I'm not rich ) why not just have a toggle switch where you could cut or supply power to the headlight anytime you wanted? then just leave it off till you get bike fully started and then turn it on

lol. im not rich by any means either..but as far as tons of money, all it is is a relay. as far as time, this bike is nothing BUT time, its a full resto ive been undergoing in the past year on my spare time. and besides, how much time can breaking some wires and putting in a relay really take?

im just looking for someone that has done this, to give some insight as to what wires require spliced, and opinions of different timed relays..

mine turns on as my high beam (but takes about a minute or so to "warm up")
I havent had any battery problems so far, but my bike has 2 lights, one HID high beam, and one low beam.

Im doing the HID mod right now on my F4i conversion. Im just going to use a single relay triggered off the headlight switch. I may do 1 on for daytime, 2 on for high. I will need a second relay for that.

yes, repeated on off sequences will wear out the ballasts, but how often are you starting and stopping your bike. I have a similar issue with my car's HIDs, and i've run them full time for over 2 years without failing.

I can see cheap knockoff HID's dying faster.
