Default Good buy?

Hi all, I'm new to motorcycles. I've been wanting a sportbike for as long as I can remember, but I don't have any experience yet... I've ridden my friend's f2 and it was a blast.

Anyway, I found a 98 cbr 600 f3 for $3000 obo. it has 25,000 miles, a few scratches from falling over in the garage. The guy says it runs well but needs a new chain and new sprockets.

1. how much will this cost me to fix?

2. Is it something I can do myself? (I have moderate mechanical experience, w/ cars etc)

3. Does this seem like a good deal?

I have a friend that knows a little more about bikes, and I'm going to try to take him with me to look at it. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I want a bike, but I don't want to get burned either.

Also, sorry if this isn't the right forum for questions like this...

in my opinion i would say no reason why i got mine for 2000 with 18k miles on it. with a lil bit of mods, im guessing you can talk him down a bit. my has been laid down also.
a bike that has been laid i would say 1500 - 2200 would be reasonable

My only concern is my location, it seems sportbikes are a hot item in the phoenix area. If you can find any for sale, they are usually overpriced... but they sell anyway. A lot of f2's in the area go for 2500- 3000. That's why this seemed pretty good. The more I think about it, I might just go used, but through a dealer.

Assuming you can verify what this guy is saying - that it runs well, and has only minor rash from a garage dropping - and your friend gives you the OK, I'd say to offer him $2,200 and be willing to go to $2,500. But factor in how soon you'll need to replace the tires, and any other new parts besides the ones he's saying.
