Gearbox Noise (Not CCT)

So just to start this off, I know its not my CCT, my buddys bike has one going out on a '95.
So I purchased my '97 F3 from someone who didn't care much for maintenance with 34K. Today I was riding and I was going to clutch up in 1st and my master link gave out.
I pulled in the clutch and after a bit of metal on metal rattling the bike shut off on its own. After getting the bike home and taking all the fairings off I noticed that the chain wedged itself in the chainguard on the left of the front sprocket and took off some of the metal chainguard. I started it on stands with the front sprocket on and in any gear other than 1st and neutral I hear what sounds like a small bell dinging, shifting up increases the rate of the ding. When I take the front sprocket off the noise goes away. Normally I'd take the bike in to the mechanic in town so he can have a look but I really don't trust the guy.
Thanks for the help,
Jake.

First of all, it sounds like you're not going to want to reuse the sprockets or chain because of the PO. Pretty sure he/she most likely didn't replace the sprockets if they weren't concerned about maintenance.
Have you checked the engine case for any damage. I just bought an R6 from a guy who didn't change out the sprockets when replacing the chain. The chain slipped off the rear sprocket due to the teeth being woefully worn out. The chain ended up taking a huge chunk out of the engine case to the point where the transmission can be seen.
How tight are you torquing down the front sprocket? It almost sounds like the washer on the fastener is making the noise. If you have a camera, post a video of it. I'm having a tough time
