fuel pump
I've read mixed answers on the site.
Can anyone tell me for sure that the fuel pump on a '96 600 f3 should shoot gas with the outlet tube off and start button pressed and engine turning over? Something is definitely screwy. First, I got no gas out of it while cranking. Then I hooked up gravity feed with about a half tank and it idled, but once I gave it gas it bogged out which I assume is normal even though people have said like 5k rpm for gravity feed. But the f'd up thing is when I jump the relay and turn the key on, it pumps!
I've checked the relay according to the manual and it checks normal. I'm thinking either the pump or the relay is giving mixed results but someone said when the pump is shot, it's usually shot! I'm so confused. Also, I noticed a screw on the top of the pump. I havn't searched for this yet, but is there any way to fix it if it's sticking or something? Someone please shed some light.

In the shop manual, there is a fuel pump flow test that has you bypass the relay and then measure the amount of fuel that the pump delivers in a predetermined amount of time. I did the test, it passed with flying colors. The pump however was still bad. It worked intermittently. My wifes bike would run fine, then suddenly it would seem like it was running out of fuel. It would die. It would take several minutes before we'd be able to get it running again. We replaced the pump (over 6 months ago) and haven't had an issue since.
thanks. If no one else has any ideas, I'm buying a pump. I just wish I could pinpoint the problem because right now, it could be the pump working intermittently, or I'm even thinking the ignition control unit because I think that sends the signal to the relay? My battery died 10 minutes before the bike wouldn't start at all and I replaced the stator and r/r last year. Could these problems both be icu related? The shop manual says nothing about testing the icu! Anyone heard of this?

mine did the same thing it died while I was ridding then I pushed it home and it started after that. Then a few months later It died again. tested the pump and it sputterd then worked then stoped ect... for now I just took the pump out and have it set up with gravity it work pretty good but acts a lil funny around 100 miles on the tank.
