Fork Seal Troubles
I'm having trouble replacing a blown fork seal. I have been following the manual but just can't seam to get the old seal to break loose. I've tried holding the lower in a vise and ripping up on the tube to try to ram the old seal out with no success. Any tips/tricks out there?
Thanks

Did you remove the allen bolt under the axle-pinch clamp?

I usually clamp the caliper bracket in a vise (with an old t-shirt).
Grab the upper tube and yank, a couple of times.
Also, note the snap-ring washer (#14). Gotta remove it, as well.
Hope this helps, Ern

I had i similar issue when i replaced the seals on mine. Turns out the lower bushing was going to the inside of the upper bushing as i would try to slide the fork leg apart effectively spreading the upper bushing creating one hell of a interference fit. It took me at least an hour of pulling on the fork leg over and over to get the seal to come out.
Yeah man I think that's what I'm up against. I can hear and feel the bushings overriding each other when I try to yank the two tubes apart. Then I have to basically beat the lower against the ground the get it to come unstuck.
So you just kept pulling on it and it eventually came out? No heat or anything?

Yup sounds like the same thing. when i pulled mine they too would get stuck and i used a rubber mallet to get it free each time. After about 30 minutes of this process i really started to lose hope. I got out a ruler with mm on it and began to measure the depth of the seal in the fork leg evey few pulls and sure enough it was very very slowly working its way out. Never used any heat. When i did the second one i knew what i was up against, I had to do the same process but it seemed to come out a little easier. good luck with it!
I'm glad to hear someone else is having trouble. I have been yanking on a 89 CBR600 F1 fork tube for quite awhile with no luck. Seems like I'm destroying it. I have even put in old axle and stood on it while pulling up. I'm using a 2x4 and dead blow to knock the tube loose after getting them wedged by pulling up. Please tell me that this is the proper way to do it...
Well I'm sure whacking it with a 2x4 is not the proper way but man I know your your pain. It was torture to hit mine with the rubber mallet to break the bushings apart but I too found no info on any other way around this issue.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just started replacing my fork seals and was having the same problem, I was a little shy with how hard I would hit those bushings but after reading this we are on the road again! I am taking pictures and I will be posting a step by step how to since I was not able to find one and this is my first time opening up forks.
