Default engine rattling noise

I have engine noise on the top right side of my engine (brake lever side). It sounds like something is clanking around and I wonder if its the valves or timing chain tensioner etc. I was told by another mechanic that it was a timing chain tensioner but he didnt actually hear it himself.

Im having the same issues out of my 96. I ordered an APE cam chain tensioner, and it should be here within the week. I also wondered if the valves needed to be adjusted, I read up a little bit on the valves, and it seems like its going to be a pain in the *** because I will probably have to wait on shims after I find out the values needed.

I was debating on ordering the EBAY shim kit, but wasnt sure if I should put my valves in EBAYs hands.

Hey guys it's definitely the CCT that's coming from the right side. A.P.E manual is definitely worth every penny! Very easy to replace too.

Good Luck

How involved is the process of replacing it? Do you have to take the cams out and the chain off too while your replacing it? Is there anyway to adjust it or do you just usually replace it?

A rattling noise coming from the engine can be any number of things, including your tensioner. I'd advise you to take off the fairings and just take it for a spin to your local mc repair shop, they are usually able to tell you whats wrong just by listening.
Good luck with fixing your bike!

I'd be willing to bet it's your CCT. I put the APE Manual CCT on my bike and it's was so much quieter! It was like a completely different bike. The OEM CCT's always fail. It's two bolts to take out the old one. And a simple adjusting to put on the new one. Quick and easy.

Yeah well, i thought my cct had gone, when it was in fact exhaustgas leakage from where the exhaust pipes connect to the engineblock, made a similar noise. Found that out after i'd spent money on a new cct...

Is it bad to ride your bike if your cam chain tensioner is rattling?
