Question Does a fuel pump really matter?

I've read that without one, the carbs might get too much gas all the time and run rich?

I currently have a F3 with and f2 pitcock and no pump. It runs pretty rich right now, but that also may be the short supertrapp exhaust on it.

Either way, I'm trying to figure out the easiest and best way to deliver reliable fuel: Buy a napa pump and re do it? Or just leave it with F2 gravity feed?

I put in I believe 83 accord fuel pump. Works great. Google for more information. I suggest staying with a pump. When you get into the higher rpms the carbs can become starved. Run rich at lower rpms run lean at higher. If im not mistaken.

thanks, that would make sense if true. I run really rich low down and bog, then up around 9k or so I'm getting popping when I let off the gas. Definitely not an ultra smooth powerband right now.

It's not like an FI pump. For example, most FI bikes put somewhere around 3x bar pressure on the fuel rail (about 45psi). However, your fuel pump for the F3 only puts about 2-3 psi on the carbs. It's important because if you were able to hold the bike wide open - you'd eventually starve the carbs. You don't want too much pressure though, because the only thing keeping the level correct in the bowls is a float and a needle valve.

So, in short - Stick with the OEM fuel pump. Nothing beneficial is going to come from having a bigger pump or anything like that. And your carbs (float height , jet size, air needle length, etc) are designed with the parameters of the stock pump being there. Will it run on gravity feed - yup. Will it run under a lot of throttle as well under gravity feed as well as it would with a fuel pump - no.

thanks cornice. I read somewhere 4-5lbs for a standard fuel pump should be fine, I assume that it would work basically perfect since it's only a 1lb or 2 off the stock.
