Default Cali vs. 49 state.

I picked up a 1998 F3 the other week, and have come to find out the past owner didn't jet the carb after modifying it. I'm looking at jet kits and there is a different kit for the cali vs 49 state versions. Is there a way to tell if it is cali spec? Maybe something in the vin? I have been googling it from my phone all day!

Cali version will have a charcoal canister under the swing arm. Will also have two air solenoids in the air piping.

Does the bike run dry at 1/8 to 1/4 throttle opening?

yeah. If i'm leaving from a light I have to floor it to get up to 2-3k rpms where it still is slow and laggy but doesn't sputter or stumble. From there I am okay when I give it more throttle, and at about 4k I'm much much smoother and more powerful (probably closer to normal) I know the kid had new factory jets put on recently, but then again it had an early f3 tail woodscrewed to the seat so i dunno.
Also getting horrible gas mileage, probably because I have to give it so much throttle to ride

Ok, so if you have a K&N filter and/or slip-on exhaust, jetting will probably help you a lot. I installed Factory Pro stage one kit and really "woke up" the performance of my F3.

yep, thats what I'm figuring. My problem was that I wasn't sure if i should order the cali or the 49 state jet kit. I really liked the 6sigma kit but I have seen some mixed reviews. I don't like that the dynojet kit doesn't come with any pilot jets, and that is where my problem seems to be

You can save a lot of cash by ordering just the jets you want, ($6 or $7 on a couple of websites) but adjustable slide needles are a plus. You can use small washers to Lift the stock spacers. Some kits also include the pilot jet adjusting socket.

The kits are designed to reduce the amount of trial and error. If you want to do everything, the kit is a good way to go. Factory Pro was my choice and I'm happy with the result.
